Life of Libby with Heather Shafter
Launching a conversation about what we learn from Life of Libby and how we can build on it.
Life of Libby: Chasing Peace & Justice with Humor, Guts, & Passion
This is the book. A 10-year project that started in 2013 with a conversation at the Trolley Car Diner in Philadelphia. I had already known Libby Frank for about 10 years by the time we had this conversation. In that time, she had told me dozens of intriguing and inspiring stories about her life as a peace & justice activist. It occurred to me finally that I wanted to share these stories in a book. But more than that, I wanted to understand how Libby came to do all of these things. How did she know what to do? What drove her to continue her work on such difficult issues? Writing this book with Libby answered ALL of my questions.
1. Why write more?
Originally, I imagined that I would write a book about Libby, but through the process I realized that it had to be Libby’s book in her own voice. This is a place for the debrief. It is an opportunity to explore the stories in the book (and maybe a few that didn’t make it into the book)—what they mean to me, what they mean to the readers, what we learn from them, and how we build on what we learn. It’s also a place to explore the intersection between Libby’s actions and how people are acting for peace and justice today.
2. Why are you here?
You, dear reader, may be here because you are interested in learning more about Libby’s story, or the story behind the story. You may be getting a dose of inspiration to keep on keeping on. You may be here to join a conversation with like-minded people who believe that each of us can make a positive difference in the world; or even that we must.
3. What to expect
My intention is to post 2x/month with one of the following:
Story from the book along with my thoughts about it and an invitation to share your own thoughts
Summary of a podcast or YouTube guest appearance (where we talk about Life of Libby) along with a link to the recording
Recommendation of work others are doing that intersect with ideas from the book
I hope you’ll join me on this next journey!
